Mubi: The Fast Recovering Wounded Town in Nigeria

Northern Nigeria

During the terrorist invasion on October 29th 2014, there were lots of damages and casualties on the community of mubi which is situated in the North-eastern Nigeria, Adamawa state. I was a survivor of this attack. Since the month of the attack, I never returned until now. I entered the town on 2-june-2015. As I journeyed towards the town, I was eager to see what’s left of her as I could see heavy tracks lefts on the tar road by the mercenaries used by both the soldiers and the insurgents(Boko Haram). As I approached Hong Local government Area, I saw a bridge that was damaged as a result of an airforce assault on the terrorist during the recapture mission by the military. It also left an anti-aircraft carrier vehicle burnt beyond repair. As I saw this damages I was shocked. I wondered if this current journey of mine was not a mistake because if the roads were like this, how much more of the town it leads to?

As time went by, I reached the town finally. As I entered a cab to my destination, I saw how the banks were mercilessly damaged with explosives. UBA Bank was the worst of all as its building was collapsing and only held by some tiny rods which means the whole building is condemned. The others had their treasuries and safes blown open with explosives as well. I felt like crying after seeing this whole mess that has befallen the business Hub of Adamawa state. But one thing that shocked me the most as I kept on moving around town was seeing people going on about their normal businesses with joy and cheerful faces. They looked happy with their lives irrespective of what has happened to their beloved town of residence. the most inspiring and challenging  motivation I got was when I saw an old time friend of mine who survived the attack last year and still came back with his wife and kids. They were looking so happy to be back. I was surprised but reserved my expression.

I later went to the market and to my greatest surprise, I met the whole area busy with people selling and buying massively to the extent that there was serious traffic jam everywhere as a result of goods being off-loaded for their owners. I paused and wondered if these people are alright. I was like where did they get this courage of moving on from? I guess there is nothing that God can’t do for his creation. I later went home and took some serious rest cause I have seen a lot for the day. I postponed all movement to the next day(3rd-june-2015).

Early in the morning the next day I decided that I will be visiting my school which I last saw the day we ran out of with fear during the invasion by Boko Haram. I entered the school premises, it was so quiet apart from the area  where the primary and secondary section were situated. As I approached the hostels I could see through the windows some properties of students which they left behind. I looked at my hostel from afar and saw it locked with padlock for security reasons by the school authorities. I kept moving forward and walked pass the girls hostels and I remembered how busy and noisy it used to be but at this moment it was desolate with only lizards running to and fro around the premises with some female security women in front of the hostels. I then decided to head towards our school chapel of worship. When I got closer I saw that it was burnt massively. I could not see any other sight inside apart from dark smokes all over the walls and when I got much closer I discovered that the windows were broken, plastic chairs burnt, all musical instrument burnt beyond picking. The podium was broken and thrown to the floor. I felt like shedding tears but I remembered how much of this the Israelites suffered in their days where a foreign king who captures them would use the holy chalice to party and drink wine to stupor. I looked at our prayer ground which was is filled with tress. It looked quiet and hungry for students who come their to pray and share knowledge with each other. I recalled moments we would sing and dance to the glory of God on those grounds. Those days made me sober and I decided to leave the premises.

All I saw in town was cheering but those of my school left me heart broken. As of now we still can’t find some of us who got missing during the invasion. All these thoughts kept coming back to my head after a long while. This town is fast recovering but the pains of its painful past leaves a stamp of sorrow on our hearts as we have lost some young and old who were supposed to be here till today. No matter what happens I still love my country with passion and won’t give up on her as I will help to my best to support her to recover all that she has lost in days like this.
